Vancouver Loan FAQ

The questions Vancouver borrowers ask before a first payday or installment loan, answered in a few sentences each with a link to the page that goes deeper. In short: a payday loan of $100 to $1500 costs $14 per $100, an installment loan of $500 to $10000 runs 18% to 35% APR over 3 to 60 months, and both fund by e-transfer under BC law.

Cost and BC rules

What does a payday loan cost in Vancouver?

$14 for every $100 borrowed, as one flat fee. $300 costs $42 and is repaid as $342, and $1000 costs $140 and is repaid as $1140. The payday loans Vancouver page works every amount up to $1500.

What does an installment loan cost?

Between 18% and 35% APR, with the rate set by your credit file, your income and your time on the job. At 30% APR, $2500 over 24 months is about $140 a month and roughly $850 in interest. The installment loans Vancouver page has the payment tables.

Which law covers a payday loan in BC, and who enforces it?

Part 6.1 of the Business Practices and Consumer Protection Act and the Payday Loans Regulation, enforced by Consumer Protection BC, which licenses every payday lender serving a BC address. The rules limit a loan to half your net pay in the term, cap it at $1500 and 62 days, ban rollovers and set the age at 19. The payday loans page sets out each one.

How long do I have to cancel?

Until the end of the second day the lender is open for business after you receive the first advance, at no cost. Money received on a Friday from a lender open on weekdays can be cancelled until the end of Tuesday. The how it works page covers what happens after you sign.

Applying and funding

How do I apply from Vancouver?

Online, in about five minutes, on a phone or a laptop: a short form, a read-only bank check in place of pay stubs, and an e-signature on an agreement that states the cost in dollars. One application reaches payday and installment lenders. The how it works page lists what to have ready.

How fast does the e-transfer arrive?

A payday loan signed on a weekday morning often lands the same afternoon by Interac e-transfer. An evening application usually funds the next business day, and a Friday night one generally waits until Monday. The e-transfer loans Vancouver page has the timing by hour and day.

I live in Surrey, Coquitlam or on the North Shore. Does that change anything?

No. A lender licensed in BC serves every BC address on the same fee and the same rules. The areas we serve hub covers each community, from White Rock to Deep Cove.

Can I apply at 18?

No. The age of majority in BC is 19, and a licensed lender will not sign a loan with anyone younger. Once you are 19 with a job and a chequing account, you can apply; the how it works page lists the rest.

Bad credit and approval

Can I get a loan in Vancouver with bad credit?

A payday lender decides mostly on the employment deposits in your chequing account, so old collections do not settle the answer by themselves. An installment lender reads the credit file and prices it into the rate, nearer 35% APR for a rough file. All credit is considered and approval is never certain; the bad credit loans Vancouver page explains what a decline tends to mean.

How much can I borrow the first time?

A first payday loan usually lands between $100 and $500, because BC limits it to half your net pay in the term and a new lender starts small. A first installment offer usually sits between $500 and $3000. The personal loans Vancouver page covers how income and term set the ceiling.

My pay swings with shifts and tips. Will a lender count it?

The lender counts what reaches your chequing account, so wages and tips paid through payroll count and cash kept out of the bank does not. Offers are sized to the smaller recent cheques. The Port Moody page walks through this for restaurant pay.

Repaying and problems

When is the money due?

A payday loan comes out of your chequing account in one debit on your next pay date, never more than 62 days after you sign. An installment loan takes a fixed payment on the dates in the agreement. The payday loans Vancouver page shows how the due date lands on each pay cycle.

What if I cannot pay on the due date?

Contact the lender before the date instead of letting the debit bounce, since a bounce adds your bank's NSF charge and the lender's returned payment fee. A BC lender cannot roll the loan over, and a third payday loan within 62 days must be repayable in instalments over at least 3 pay periods. The payday loans page covers the options.

Rent is short every month. Is a payday loan the answer?

No, because a gap that repeats means a fee that repeats: $450 short every month costs $63 a time, or $756 a year. Ask the landlord to move the due date closer to payday, or take one installment loan to reset the account. The New Westminster page covers rent increases and moves.

How do I check a lender is licensed, and where do I complain?

Check the name on the agreement against the licence list at Consumer Protection BC, which also takes complaints. A licensed lender never asks for a fee before funding. The how it works page lists the warning signs.

How Loans Vancouver makes money: loansvancouver.ca is a free loan connection service, not a lender. When you apply, we match your application with licensed Canadian lenders and earn a referral fee from the lender if your loan funds. This never changes your rate or costs you anything. We do not make credit decisions and never charge borrowers. The lender sets and discloses the cost before you sign; payday fees are capped by provincial law and installment loans run 18% to 35% APR. All lending is subject to lender approval and provincial rules.
